1927Tommy Armour Tommy Armour, a Scot who had recently turned professional, holed a 10-footer
for a birdie on the last green to tie Harry Cooper at the Oakmont (Pa.) Country
Club in June. Cooper had three-putted the 71st green but still had seemed a
winner. Their scores of 301 were 31 over par and the highest of modern times,
in testimony to the terrors of the course. Amour, representing the Congressional
Country Club, near Washington, D.C., won the playoff, 76 to 79; his first four
rounds were 788-71-76-76. |
