Tommy Bolt

Tommy Bolt, 39, a native Oklahoman, led after every round with 71-71-69-72-283, three over par, and. won by four strokes over Gary Player, 22, of Johannesburg, South Africa, at Southern Hills Country Club, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ben Hogan injured his left wrist in practice and finished in a tie for tenth at 294. Chaarles R. Coe of Oklahoma City tied for thirteenth at 295 to be leading amateur and later in the season won the Amateur Championship.

Sam Snead failed to qualify for the last 36 holes, his first such failure in 18 Opens. The entry of 2,132 set another record. Galleries of 34,500 for the three days approached record proportions in spite of heat and strong winds. The purse was increased to approximately $35,000, a new high, and first prize was raised to $8,000.
